Buffalo Bird Blues
fiction for children, ages 5-9 (picture book)
900 words (story) + 350 words (natural history)

Story summary: In a violent spring storm, a newly fledged buffalo bird is blown out of buffalo days into cowbird and cattle time. She longs for the infinite prairie and keeps the memory alive in her song. A century and a half later, a fledgling offspring of the buffalo bird is carried by a spring storm to an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where a newly introduced herd of buffalo roams, and there she is reunited with the bison she has known only as a song passed on through the generations.
